And just like that the Summer is over! It’s been a lovely busy one for our household and we’re now preparing for my daughter to go off to University. I’m thrilled for her and sad in equal measure.
I’m putting on a brave face by keeping busy and embracing the new Autumn season. I love the seasonal fashion switch and seeing the transformation of the shops – they are already full of gorgeous new Autumn styles. That’s why now is the ideal time to reflect on your Summer wardrobe.
Yes, you read that correctly! It’s easy to rush into buying new season trends but taking time to note the garments you have enjoyed wearing is the key to creating future outfits you love and dressing with confidence.
The secret hack to dressing with confidence
Here’s how you can do that:-
1. Pull out all the styles you have enjoyed wearing in the past six months. Put them on a rail if you have one. Include accessories and holiday wear. I would set aside an hour to do this so you can focus on the task.
2. Try them all on and make a note of how you feel when wearing them. If you can sum up your feelings in three or less words, all the better.
3. Look for patterns, quite literally, look at what is on the rail and see if there are any recurring themes. Are there lots of bold colours, prints or textures or a particular style such as statement tops or maxi dresses? Write down two to three themes you notice.
4. Note the styles that flatter your figure and any details on these garments. Do they have a particular shaped neckline, waistband, leg shape, hemline etc. Write down at least three key details.
5. Create a wish list. Now you have noted all these details, consider how you can translate them into your Autumn wardrobe. For example, if you loved wearing wide leg linen striped trousers in Summer, you could look for wide leg patterned trousers in a heavier fabric for Autumn.
How I helped Kate come out of ‘hiding’ in Autumn
The process of taking time to reflect what you enjoy wearing is key to dressing with confidence as it enables your personality shines through. Use these notes to shop with intention and find the pieces that align with your personal style.
My client Kate and I did this during her wardrobe consultation. She loved wearing colours and prints in Summer but her Autumn work wardrobe was full of plain dark garments. She realised her image wasn’t aligned with her personal style and she was ‘hiding’.
We added in bolder colours and statement prints and she immediately felt more confidence and like herself. Not only did Kate feel great in her new outfits, they got her noticed and her career has gone from strength to strength ever since.
The most important part of dressing with confidence is having a wardrobe that feels like ‘you’. Do this today and you’ll feel more positive as a result – guaranteed!
